The film received mixed reviews from critics. The Times of India rated the film 3.5 out of 5, stating that "A superhero story origin, that's also a spiritual sequel to Shankar's Gentleman".[11] Behindwoods rated the film 2.5 out of 5, stating that "Hero is watchable Super-Hero drama with no inspiring moments."[32] Firstpost rated the 3/5, stating that "Mithran has given a neat commercial entertainer, which also calls for a rethink of our educational policy."[33] Sify rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stating that "Hero is a must watch for families this holiday season, which has a relevant message on the modern-day educational system."[34]
India Today rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stars, stating that "Hero had all the potential to become a proper superhero film sensible to Tamil cinema standards. But, the lumbering narrative (in a few portions), exaggerated scenes and illogical loopholes ruin the entire experience."[35] Sudhir Srinivasan rated the film 3 out of 5 stars, stating that "Hero takes its messaging very, very seriously. The film is a scathing criticism of the good education system. It attacks colleges, pressurising parents, the spineless government, and above all, a syllabus that stifles originality and creativity, and in the words of Mahadev (Abhay Deol), "that is designed to create labourers." Moorthy (Arjun) says as much."[36] The Indian Express rated 2 out of 5 stating that "Sivakarthikeyan's superpower is being super preachy."[37]
Baradwaj Rangan of Film Companion reviewed it as "The film is surprisingly understated. It steers clear of massy "hero" moments, and there's a lot of clear, clean thinking in the writing."[38] Haricharan Pudipeddi reviewed the film as "PS Mithran's Hero is the Gentleman tribute we needed and it's a film that pretty much gets everything right."[39]
Prabhas started his movie career with Eeswar in 2002. In 2003, he was the lead in Raghavendra. In 2004, he appeared in Varsham and Adavi Raamudu. In 2005, he appeared in Chakram and in the film Chatrapathi, directed by S. S. Rajamouli, in which he portrays the role of a refugee, exploited by goons. In 2012, Prabhas starred in Rebel, an action film directed by Raghava Lawrence. Sashidhar from The Times of India stated, "The film belongs to hard-core Prabhas fans as the movie is stylish and visually rich but not much in content".[23] Purnima Ranawat from NDTV said, "Rebel serves up fare for the mass audience. The film will be definitely liked by Prabhas' fans. Watch it for the dancing talent of Tamannaah Bhatia and action skills of Prabhas."[24] Radhika Rajamani from Rediff.com gave the movie one and half stars out of five and said, "Working with hardly any storyline, director Raghava Lawrence had made a film that is arduous to watch... Rebel is a movie for the masses and certainly not for the discerning audience."[25] He rendered voice for a short cameo for the film Denikaina Ready (2012).[26]
In 2013, Prabhas starred in Mirchi. Jeevi of Idlebrain.com gave a rating of 3.25 out of 5, commenting that "First half of Mirchi is decent. Flashback episode which occupies 100% of second half is good. Climax could have been better. The plus points of the film are Prabhas, music and all-round orientation. On a whole, Mirchi has all the ingredients of a commercial potboiler".[27] Mahesh S Koneru gave his verdict that "At the Box Office, the film will turn in a good commercial performance", giving the film a score of 3.25/5.[28] Way2movies also gave a rating of 3.25/5, giving the verdict that "Prabhas rocks the show in this decent yet formulaic commercial entertainer".[29] Super good movies gave the film 3 stars in a scale of 5, reviewing that "Go and Watch Mirchi, It entertains both Class and Mass. But while its happening, you can sit back and admire some superbly-designed cinematic moments. Saurabh Shukla, playing the genial acting class guru, tells wannabe star Vikram Jaisingh (Farhan): Hollywood ka hero banana bahut aasaan hai,par Bollywood ke hero ko sab kuch karna padta hai. The man who has just shown us he can direct and act and sing in his last film (Rock On) swings a cool Bollywood hip here: watch him gyrate in a shocking pink waistcoat.
Konkona as Sona-the-struggler compromising with a director whos been stringing her along, agreeing to bit parts in the hope of the big one, facing rejection is equally first rate. Just like Vikram, who is shown to be not such a nice guy on his way up the ladder (schmoozing with the heroines mom, dumping his old friends, betraying his girl friend),Sona is no doodh-ki-dhuli girl. She knows what it takes, and is willing to do it,but unlike him,she knows where to draw the line. The roundedness of their characters is one of the high points of the film.
The film has been mounted lavishly, and no expense has been spared at making it look and feel authentic. A fleet of international cricketers have quite a lot of screen time. They include Harbhajan Singh and Jayasuriya and the dishy Brett Lee: their job is to stand around and applaud while our hero wins the matches.
The two children who help put these tales together with valuable, but thankfully children-like inputs, are competent foils to Sandler. He is trying to re-discover his childhood, which included some magical moments with his father; they are trying to find a foothold as adults without a father around them. In this film, for some time, they find a delicate balance. 2ff7e9595c
